What it means is that the experience happened before 1987or so when I had to hang up my brushes for a while, work in the graphic design world, move to Oregon, go to school, and devote myself to writing. I’m sorry to be sketchy about the past, but I just plain can’t find this stuff anywhere! I’ll keep looking...)
