I have been painting in transparent watercolors, off and on, for nearly 30 years, and recently I’ve discovered the joys of watercolor crayons and watercolor pencils. Things have gotten very abstract for me since then. “Remodern” is the term I’m using to describe the direction my work is going in. Besides being a painter, I’ve also been a graphic designer, gone to college and earn my masters in English from University of Colorado Boulder (1998—at the ripe old age of 43), and taught writing at Rogue Community College. Thank god I came to my senses and went back to painting.
I first started watercolors because a friend of mine Serena Lefler was a watercolorist, as was her mother. Serena convinced me I might have fun with it, so I took classes from the late Kathy Wengi O’Connor, a fairly well-known Oregon watercolorist in her day (early 1980s). She taught weekend workshops through Central Oregon Community College’s community education department. That’s where I found out that watercolor usually can be anything but fun! O’Connor’s workshops were the most significant part of my “formal” art education. My work has been published by Wines & Vines magazine, Nevada Woman, American Shotgunner, and the Great Reno Balloon Race. Washoe Medical Center and Fitzgeralds Hotel/Casino hold some of my paintings in their corporate collections. I have been included in exhibitions at the Nevada Museum of Art, University of Nevada’s Sheppard Museum, the Oregon state capitol building, and Sunriver Lodge.
